Here is a link to learn more about the Fish Gate. The Fish Gate History
Today, we are at the Fish Gate. In the book we read how we are called to be fishers of men. This section really spoke to me.
“In ancient times, men would fish in boats
using nets. They would cast the nets out around
their boat, then wait. And wait. And wait some
more. Pushing their boats out into the sea was
their responsibility. The condition of their nets
was their responsibility. Casting their nets
out from the boat was their responsibility.
Maintaining their grip on the nets was their
responsibility. But what swam into their nets
was completely out of their hands. This is the
way we are also meant to fish for souls.
“But what is my net?” you ask. That’s an
easy one. Your life is your net.
You do not know what influence your life
may have on the souls all around you—and
you may never know until the day your life
is played back for all the rest of us to see.”
So often I want to open the eyes and ears of others and pull them into a closer, meaningful relationship with their Creator and Redeemer. My heart breaks for those who are swimming in the deep, and barely holding their head above water. So many seem to be slowly drowning. Yet, as I pray for the lost and I seek to obey Yehovah, I know that I can not be “the Holy Spirit.” I must place my life and others in God’s hand. But, I do have a role to play in others lives.
Because Yeshua says,
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
And James and John, disciples of Yeshua said,
“By this we know what love is: Jesus laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone with earthly possessions sees his brother in need, but withholds his compassion from him, how can the love of God abide in him. Little children, let us love not in word and speech, but in action and truth.” 1 John 3:16-18
“Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?” James 2:15-16
Grant Luton asks these questions in today’s reading:
Ask yourself these questions:
▶ Do I keep my boat safely in the
harbor? Or, do I take the risk to
launch out into unknown waters?
▶ Do I keep my net safely stowed in
the boat? Or, do I release it into
the world for others to encounter?
▶ Do I keep my net mended? Or, is it
full of holes? Do others just swim
through it without my having any
impact on their lives?
▶ Do I maintain control of my net?
Or, do I allow it to be swept away
with the current of emotion or
popular trends?
The first question is a challenge, because it makes me think of something Paul tells us to do:
“But we urge you, brothers, to excel more and more and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters, and to work with your own hands, as we instructed you. Then you will behave properly toward outsiders, without being dependent on anyone.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
Paul also says to Titus that women should be taught to be busy at home, and quietly doing the things that need done at home. So, I think there is sometimes a need to pull our boats out of the water and not even set sail into the dark unknown waters of this world. So, I pray today, that Yehovah will give me wisdom to know when to take my boat out, and when to keep it at harbor. I do not want to ever fear taking my boat out. But, I only want to go where He leads.
Do I keep my net safely stowed in
the boat? Or, do I release it into
the world for others to encounter?
The author says that my life is my net. Do I take my life out into the world to encounter the world? I would prefer to stay home and just be with my own people and do my own thing and never leave my home. I love my home life best. But, I do think we are called to be in the world, but not of the world. So, today, I pray that I will continue to find opportunities to minster and care for the world around me.
Do I keep my net mended? Or, is it
full of holes? Do others just swim
through it without my having any
impact on their lives?
Wow, this is a great question. The only way to keep my life from tearing and breaking is to constantly check it over after each use. I must evaluate my life and see if it has any weakness or tears. Then if it does I must take needle and thread and reinforce it and strengthen it. So, I pray today, that I will always take the Word of God and use them to strengthen my life. I pray that I will take the time to pray to my Creator and have Him reinforce my life with His Strength. I don’t want to become lazy or neglectful not being able to see how I have let the things of this world come in and take hold in my life, leaving no room for those whom Yehovah has for me to catch in my net.
Do I maintain control of my net?
Or, do I allow it to be swept away
with the current of emotion or
popular trends?
Again, what a great question. Through Yehovah’s strength I must hold tight to what is true and right. If I let go of that then I can easily let my feelings and emotions lead me into deep waters and then I start drowning too. I think of how the disciples went out fishing together, and it often took two or more men to cast out the nets and to draw them in. I don’t want to be in the boat alone, I don’t want to fish alone. I am so grateful today for accountability and fellowship. If I swim alone, fish alone, sail alone, I can easily become turned around and lose sight of the shore, I can become weak or develop a cramp. I can be overtaken by a storm, or even the weight of the net as I pull on it and fall into the sea. I must seek fellow fishermen to work together and care for each other. Today, I pray that all God’s people have fellow fishermen to go out into the waters with.
Abba Father,
Thank you for sending Yeshua to be our example of to live in this world. I ask that today you would help me look at my life and be honest about how I live. Let me ask myself these hard questions and answer them honestly. Then give me the wisdom, strength, and courage to make the changes necessary to be the person you created me to be. Help me not make excuses, help me not compare, and help me to not be selfish. I don’t want to be a “shellfish” I want to be a fisher of men. Guide me and teach me Your Ways.
I ask that you be with my family and friends during these days leading up to Your Holy day, Yom Kippur. Help them to take time, make time to really seek You and to search their hearts. May Your Name be glorified in us all.
Amen

We are Bible believing, scripture only people. We love to learn about the Hebrew roots of our faith. We believe it is important to not add or subtract from the Divine Word of God. The compiled scriptures that agree with one another and have no contradiction is the 66 books of what is commonly referred to as the Christian Bible, or the Holy Bible.
These writings were originally written by men inspired by God. They were written in the language of the writers and readers of the original documents. Many of the original documents have been lost, but God’s Word is eternal and remains. Therefore, it is important to us to study, learn, and consider the culture, history, and language of the original writers of the scriptures.
In our studies we have learned that the true name of God is Yehovah, and His son, our Messiah, is named Yeshua. Therefore, as you read our posts we will use the Hebrew names of God and our Messiah.
