Why do I read through the Bible every year?

Bible Reading Challenge

Ten years ago, I read through my Bible from cover to cover in three months.  Before that I had read whole books of the Bible at a time, and I had read large sections of the Bible, but for some reason I had never been able to read the whole Bible from cover to cover without quitting.  I realize now it was a lie that kept me from completing the task.  It was laziness and excuses, and distractions.  The truth is the Bible is not a hard book to read.  It is written in very simple and easy language.  It is not collegiate or confusing if we stop making excuses and read it, we will discover it is the greatest book ever.

Since that first reading of the Bible from cover to cover ten years ago, I have read my Bible from cover to cover more than a dozen times now.  Why?

Because it has changed my life each and every time.  It has made me realize who I am and who God is.  I haven’t found all the answers yet, but each time I read my Bible I find more and more answers, more hope, more peace, and more purpose.

This year I am using Christy Jordan’s Bible reading plan again.  I really enjoy her commentary, and I like the way she breaks down the reading portions to bit size pieces daily.  Here is a link to her study for this year.

Genesis 1-3 Deep Diving Bible Study

This is how I will be using her guide, I am sharing in case you would like to try it with your family too.

Each evening our family will do the reading of the scripture together after dinner.  I will encourage my older children to pre-read the section to themselves and listen or read Christy’s post for the section before dinner.  Then we will discuss the reading together after reading it together out loud as a family.

For my homeschooling mom friends, doing this Bible reading plan and discussing it will cover literature, history, Bible, and more for school subjects.  If you require your students to journal, draw, or memorize scripture will doing this plan you will also cover grammar, spelling, phonics, and penmanship.  At my house, I have my students that can read and write independently, do a journal entry each day.  If they are younger (ages 8-14ish) I give them the option of drawing.

For my severely dyslexic students the audios that Christy does for each section is a blessing.  They are usually 7-20 minutes long and very easy to understand. I also allow my students to use audio Bible as well.  So often we are told that reading is the greatest tool a person can obtain, and yes it is truly a great asset, but the Bible says hearing the Word brings life.  So, don’t discount the value of the audio book.

Learning daily from God’s Word will help you be a better mom, wife, home maker, employee, person!

Teaching your children from God’s Word daily will make them a person who loves God’s Word and knows Him.  It will help them find their identity. In this world that is full of so many confusing messages about who we are and what we can and can not be, the Bible is the answer to finding our true identity and calling.

The Bible is the solid foundation we all need to stand firm in this ever changing world.

So take the challenge and start reading.
