Becoming like Christ by developing Godly Character through Healthy Habits! (Studying the book of Titus)
Home Discipleship . Home Schooling . Torah/BibleWe recently started our new school year. We have been homeschooling for over 20 years now, and to be honest, I hope to homeschool until the day I die. I tell my children often that I can’t wait to teach my grandchildren God’s Word. My oldest grandson is 3, and I admit I pray daily that his parents will move closer so that he can come to grandma school. My youngest son is only one year old than my oldest grandson. There is nothing more exciting than listening to and watching a four year old learn, especially the things of God.
My children do not do formal academics until around age six, depending on their interest and abilities. But, from the day my children are born they attend Bible and History class with me. I love the Bible, I love history, I love maps, and I love timelines. There is so much to learn from the past. When we do History at our house it is not your average class. We learn about places, times, cultures, and wars, and such, but we also learn about God, His law, His standard, His character, His Word, and His people. Every history lesson leads us to God’s Word and His Ways.
This school year is no different in that regard, but it is different in that I designed our lessons completely different from years past. I have used many different curriculums in our school over the years. Rod and Staff, Christian Light, Alpha and Omega, Robinson, KONOS, Homeschooling Torah (my favorite), etc. Not to mention the many different supplements we have used. There are lots of good school materials and Bible study materials available. But, this year I wanted to make a change, get excited about school, and do something different. At first I thought of using My Father’s World curriculum. I have always loved it, but never used it. But as I continued to pray and consider what to do this school year. I decided to focus on Godly character and geography. I wanted to really talk about how our daily habits are formed by our inward character. I began to get some ideas of how to do that, and then a friend reminded me of a study I had actually looked at before written by another homeschool mom. This study is about 12 missionaries and included some minor geography lessons in it. It is called
I was excited I didn’t have to start from scratch I could take this curriculum and build on it, and that is exactly what I did. But I needed a theme verse. A passage of scripture that really stated what the focus for our school year is. Normally the theme is short, like Be Prepared, or Be Joyful. But I wasn’t coming up with any little “Be” something or other. I kept praying and the Lord began to form an idea in my mind.
The theme that finally came to me was:
Becoming like Christ by developing Godly Character through Healthy Habits!
Now I just needed a theme verse. I decided on Titus 2:11-14.
Wow, this is exactly what God has been challenging me on. Because of the grace of God that came through my Savior Jesus Christ, who died for my sins, to redeem me from every lawless deed, I can be godly, righteous, sober, and I can live in hope!!!! Jesus Christ redeemed me from every lawless deed. He purified me as His own special person, so that I can zealously do His Good WORKS!!!
I have read the book of Titus many, many times in my life. But for some reason as I prepared the lessons for my children on this book, every word jumped up of the page. As if Yehovah, Himself, was saying, “Katie, I am speaking to you, are you listening?”
The first week of school we studied the whole letter of Titus that was written by Paul. The whole three chapter letter is all about teaching God’s leaders to create healthy habits. I am not talking about eating healthy food, or going to bed on time, or being physically active. Those are good habits, and we definitely want to have those good habits, but I am talking of greater things.
Here are a few examples:
Blameless – someone whose character is above reproach
Not overbearing – someone who is humble
Not quick-tempered- someone who is understanding and forgiving
Sober- someone who keeps his wits about him, and is moderate in behavior and habit
Not violent- someone who has self control
Not pursuing dishonest gain-someone who is fair and just
Hospitable- someone who will stop and care for others even if inconvenienced
Loves what is good- someone who prefers things that are useful and beneficial
Self-controlled- someone who stops and thinks before acting
Upright-someone who does what is right just because it is right
Holy- someone who is set apart from this world
Disciplined- someone who has developed healthy habits through Godly character
Teaches and refutes with sound doctrine-someone who has learned and applies God’s Word daily
That is just three verses in chapter 1 of Titus. These verses are written to Titus so that he can choose Godly leaders for the church in Crete. This is the type of men he is to look for. I don’t know about you, but that is a challenging list for me. I have been pondering it and many other verses in the book of Titus, and I hope that as my children and I study through this school term, I will be able to make some good healthy changes to my character. I have determined in my heart that I want to strive to live at the highest standard that Yehovah has called His children to live at. So, one day at a time, I am challenging myself to be a person of Biblical integrity. I have a long way to go, but through the power of my Savior and Redeemer I will work towards the goal of doing His good work zealously.
How about you?
Have you read Titus?
Have you asked yourself what habits do I need to change in order to complete the Kingdom Work God has called me to do?
Are you willing to strive to live a life above reproach?
I challenge you to read Titus and make a list of all the Godly character traits and habits found in it.
Shalom

We are Bible believing, scripture only people. We love to learn about the Hebrew roots of our faith. We believe it is important to not add or subtract from the Divine Word of God. The compiled scriptures that agree with one another and have no contradiction is the 66 books of what is commonly referred to as the Christian Bible, or the Holy Bible.
These writings were originally written by men inspired by God. They were written in the language of the writers and readers of the original documents. Many of the original documents have been lost, but God’s Word is eternal and remains. Therefore, it is important to us to study, learn, and consider the culture, history, and language of the original writers of the scriptures.
In our studies we have learned that the true name of God is Yehovah, and His son, our Messiah, is named Yeshua. Therefore, as you read our posts we will use the Hebrew names of God and our Messiah.
