Prayer, Meditating on His Words

Day in the Life of a Big Family . For My Children . Katie's Ramblings . Prayer

If you have been a regular reader of my blog, you will see that I value prayer.

Recently, I have been pondering the different types of prayer, and the value of coming to God in multiple ways.  There is times that we should come to him in worship.

Worship is a prayer that brings us to our knees, our face on the floor, sometimes literally, but always internally.  Worship is when we seek God in awe of who He is and what He has done and will do.

Conversational or continuous prayer is another type of praying.  This is when we include God in our daily lives, always talking to Him in our heart throughout are busy lives.

Corporate prayer is when people come together in prayer.  Sometimes to have elders lay on hands for healing, other times to just share joys and sorrows.

But, today, I was pondering meditative prayer.  This is when we are intentional and go to a quiet place and focus in on prayer.  I wanted to write down my thoughts on meditative prayer and even share a very personal meditative prayer in hopes that it might encourage others.

I am a Christian and a follower/disciple of Jesus Christ, I sometimes call Him, Yeshua.  I want to make that clarifying statement before jumping into this discussion on meditative prayer.  Many religions meditate and some call it contemplative prayer.  Many use similar guides and tools in their time of prayer.  So, my choice of words and terms might sound like language from Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Catholicism, etc.  But, I assure you I grew up in a home that leaned towards Methodism.  But, I am not a Catholic, Jew, or Methodist…

I AM A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST ALONE!

So here is my prayer guide that I use in my quiet prayer time:

PRAYER GUIDE

  • BE STILL
    • find a quiet place to reflect on Scripture
    • take some slow deep breaths
    • slow your heart rate and calm your spirit
  • READ
    • Slowly read a verse or section of Scripture from the Bible
    • NOTICE: keywords or concepts
  • MEDITATE
    • Really focus in on words, images, concepts, thoughts
    • NOTICE: repeating thoughts, things that stand out to you
  • PRAY
    • Connect the Scripture to your life.
    • Talk to God about issues, ideas that come to your heart/mind.
  • CONTEMPLATE
    • Savour God’s presence (feel His closeness)
    • Sit and allow Him to search your heart
    • Listen
  • RESOLVE TO ACT
    • Make a plan of action in response to what God revealed to you through His Word.

I am a very hyper person, I struggle with sitting still.  So, I will get two minutes in and already my mind is off on sixty-seven rabbit trails.  So, if you are like me, don’t give up.  Pull your mind back to the Scripture.  Reread it and ask God to speak through it.  It will take some time to discipline your mind and body.  But, this style of prayer is where we as believers really grow.  This is when God molds us into His image.

Today, I have a lot going in at my house.  Some of my children are still sleepy and struggling to get back into the routine of school after being on vacation for two weeks.  I am also struggling with getting my mind organized.  We have our house up for sale, and therefore, it needs to be in order at all times.  Someone text that they would like to do a showing this evening.  My first impulse was to run around frantic getting ready for the showing, even though my family needs some extra rest, and I have Bible study tonight.  But, it was just before my quiet time that I got the text, so I decided to get the kids resting, and breath and pray first.  I will admit, I was feeling anxious about many things as I sat down to pray.

I got on my phone to check on something, and per usual I got distracted and found myself reading a blog post of someone I don’t even know.  Yes, this is a normal occurrence for me.  But, the post began with a prayer based on Ephesians 3:20.  It spoke to me instantly, and I decided to make it the Scripture passage for my prayer time.  I decided to share my prayer journal here on this post, to hopefully, help others understand how to make a Bible verse into a prayer.

The Powerful Meaning Of Ephesians 3:20 (now to him who is able)

Here is my prayer journal from today, 10-22-25

Ephesians 3:20

Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.

I highlighted the words that jumped out at me.

Father God,

Thank you for leading me to this passage today.  It is exactly what I needed to be reminded of right now.  I admit I easily begin to go into “do” mode when things see, our of my control.

Help me rest in the assurance that You are working for me, and in me.  Show me what “work” is Your work for me to do, and help me to trust You to work all things to Your Glory and good.  I honestly, don’t know the solutions to our debt, income, and house problems, but I KNOW that You care for us, and lead us if we will trust and obey where You guide.

Teach me to STOP and listen.

Teach me to see when You are declaring something to me over and over again.

Give me a Kingdom mindset, and fill me with Your peace, joy, purpose, and power.

Help me walk and talk boldly in Your Truths.

I know you have a perfect and beautiful plan.  Help me wait on that which I should wait on, and help me do that which I ought to do.

Help me know my “work” and stay on task.

Tasks for Today:

  • Do: Rest God’s faithfulness and Love, Breath
  • Manage my home well, be the peace my spouse and children need.
  • Get organized and simplify
  • Manage what I have well
    • budget
    • minimize
  • Learn to say “no.”
  • Don’t let other’s panic become mine

That was my journal entry for today.  I hope it helps you see how a quiet time of prayer doesn’t have to be complicated, and God can speak to you if you quiet your heart and mind and listen.

Sometimes, after I have my prayer time, I will fo back and find other verses to add to my journal that I find relate to my prayer.  Here are a few that came to my mind as I typed this post up.

Matthew 6:33-34

Romans 8:31

Psalms 145:13

John 14:27
