Cover to Cover Challenge 2017 (Day 18)
Bible Reading Challenge . Family . Home Schooling
If you are just joining us. We are in the beginning of a Bible reading challenge. Our family is spending 30 minutes every evening reading through the Bible from Cover to Cover. Today is day 18 of our challenge. Last night we read in the book of Leviticus. We read all about the many different sacrifices and how they were to be done. Did you know that most of the sacrifices were to be eaten? Especially the feast sacrifices. It’s true, some sacrifices were to be completely burnt up to God, but a lot of them the good meat was given to the priest and/or back to the person making the sacrifice. Isn’t that cool.
Anyway, we also read chapter 11 of Leviticus last night. This is a great chapter to learn what it means to be clean or unclean. Especially in regards to food. If your like me you may not have ever really understood these terms from the Bible. The pharisees and leaders of Jesus day, made up so many extra rules, laws, for the people about clean and unclean that it can be confusing. But the easiest way to sort out what God calls clean and unclean is to go back to this chapter in Leviticus. You see the pharisees made a rule that if a clean animal was near an unclean animal it made the clean animal unclean. This was NOT what God’s law said. Also, the pharisees made a rule that if a Jew ate with a gentile then they were unclean. Jews and Gentiles were to be separated. Think segregation in the early America. None of these actually broke the law of God, the Torah. They broke the law of the Jews. Often when Jesus and His apostles, including Paul, talk about the law, they are talking about the law of the Jews, because that was the law of the land.
Opps, I got of track there for a minute. Back to Leviticus 11. This is a great chapter to learn what God calls clean and what He calls food. The cool thing is my friend Anne has wrote a great blog explaining this chapter, so check it out.
