Yesterday, we got the call from our lawyer that the judge signed the Final Order of adoption for our Mary Katherine. This was such good news. Since this adoption was a second chance adoption (that means we are the second family to adopt Mary), the judge can make us wait longer to be sure we won’t change our minds. So, it was great news to find out that the waiting period was over and she was forever our daughter.
I have shared in previous posts that Jeremy and I never planned to adopt. We have a love for families, and when we became foster parents our hope and desire was to help keep parents and children together. But, that all changed one day, when God told Jeremy and I, both, separately that we were to make a life time commitment to two foster children that came into our home. Those two children would end up being our first adopted children. Later God lead us to adopt again, and then came the miracle of Mary’s adoption.
My parents had adopted several children, so it wasn’t that we were against adoption. It was just that we did not see ourselves as adoptive parents. We wanted to have lots of children, and just planned to do it the “natural” way. Which obviously, we are more than capable of doing. (hehe) So, when God lead us to adoption it was sort of unexpected.
But some of the best blessings in life are unexpected. Adoption is a beautiful blessing on so many levels.
First, adoption is a picture of how God loves us.
There are a great deal of scriptures written about God’s love for us and his adopting us. Here are a few of my favorites.
Adoption is God’s idea. Family was always his original plan for mankind. Adam and Eve and a garden. But sin messed the perfect family up. Sin messed it all up. OH, He knew we would sin, and He made a redemption plan. An adoption story of the greatest kind.
When God calls Himself, Father, there is a reason. He wants us to understand and relate to him as his children. But that sin issue got in the way. So, he made a miraculous plan to adopt His children by sacrificing himself in the form of man, a son. He sent a piece of himself, a son, to this sinful world to be a living breathing example of true love.
What a gift and privilege it is to be adopted by God, the creator and ruler of all. And what a blessing it is to be used by him to adopt a child and experience the understanding of that sacrifice and love He has for me.
