Wow, what an amazing time it has been these last three months. Two kids went off to Kansas to serve for a month. Two kids went off to training for two weeks. All four of those kids have been teaching 5 day clubs for the last few weeks. We had Max Camp for a week at church. We had lots of car repairs and lots of home maintenance emergencies. We had lots of lawn mower problems. We planted a garden, and it truly isn’t doing so well. We had some illnesses. Oh, yes, we had a lot of trials these last three months.
But, life is full of trials, and Satan does not like when God’s people purpose to spend time in His Word. And that is exactly what our family purposed to do. We not only decided to read through God’s Word in 90 days, but we decided to do it together as a family. It was a huge commitment. We knew that for us to read the Bible each day together, out loud, we would have to plan to read each night for an hour and a half. That is a long time to be focused and reading orally. But we knew God would give us the strength to complete this challenge and He did.
We learned so much from this challenge.
Things from the Word, things from the challenge of life, things about ourselves, things about others, and things about God.
Here is a few things we learned:
“I really liked the book of 2 Kings. I liked doing the 90 day challenge, because even though I go to church, study the Bible for school, and even teach it to others, I never made the time to really read it on my own. So, doing the 90 day challenge helped me become more disciplined. Especially, when I was away from home, I had to set aside my own time to read and pray on my own.” Rachel (age 16)
“It helped me remember to pray each morning and evening, and it helped me remember God all day. It helped me have a better attitude all day.” Bekah (age 13)
“As we continued to read the Bible, I found it easier to apply it to my life. The more we read the more I wanted to read it. I truly became hungry for the Word.” Lydia (age 15)
“I learned Satan is really real.” Steve (age 5)
“I remember the people wanted to kill Jesus so bad, they shouted, “crucify him, crucify him.” Zachery (age 7)
“God made the world.” Anna (age 3)
“God never sinned.” Davey (age 11)
“Reading both the Old testament and New testament together really made it all more clear and made a lot more sense to me. I realized during the challenge that I need to love people more, not be so judgmental, and to met others where they are at. Also, just because I have some deep personal convictions, like following the Torah, I don’t have to convince others to be like me. We all can worship God right where we are at. The only absolute in our faith is that Jesus is God and He is our Lord and Savior, and we should worship Him only. It is all about our heart, our worship and work should be all for Him only. When I was away in Kansas, it was a real learning experience, because I had to be responsible and disciplined to do my reading on my own. Rachel was a great accountability partner, she never let me get behind.” Tyler (age 18)
“I like the verse 2 Peter 3:18, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” It is one of the memory verse for 5 day clubs this summer. By reading the Bible during this 90 day challenge I felt this verse come alive in me.” Daniel (age 18)
“My favorite part was when the flood happened cause all the bad people got washed away. But, then I hated that after that bad people started rising up again. it seemed like the people weren’t very smart.” Josh (age 9)
“I always liked how much history of God’s Love continued to repeat itself. I realized God is a “being” not just a fluffy, marshmallow in the sky.” Brenden (age 15)
“At first it was hard to set aside the time to do the reading, but it really didn’t take long to get used to doing it. Right from the beginning it was a blessing. We found that even though we would spend an hour to two hours each night in the Bible we still had lots of time to do those other things we wanted to do. It was a time well spent, and we realized we often wasted the evening time together away. I personally learned from reading the Bible quickly through from the beginning to the end that it was Divinely set up. It made a lot of sense reading it that way. ” Jeremy (Dad)
I can honestly say, this summer of Bible reading has changed each of us and has changed our family as a whole. Maybe you wanted to do the challenge with us, or maybe you started it and were not able to finish it. Maybe you wanted to do it, but it sounded overwhelming to do in just 90 days. Don’t be discouraged. Just get in the Word each day, and trust the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Maybe you would like to join us for our next challenge.
